  1. Bailey!

This week's photos compared to last week's have a much wider value scale. Awesome job there! You have gotten a lot more contrast in these images -- white whites and dark darks. With keeping that in mind, it is easy to under expose or over expose an image using too much contrast. For the first image, I do think this image would benefit from some brighter values on the child statue. On the other side of the coin, the highlights on the Virgin Mary statue are blown out. But both are an easy fix in post processing!

Something else that can help improve image quality is to straighten your photographs. This is especially important for images that have architecture, landscapes, cityscapes, etc. -- as all of these have very noticeable lines. The best way to make a photo feel straight is to use the most dominate line as your guide. This tip is mainly in relation to the hall in Lacock Abbey, but it can also be applied to the two statue photos in this collection. Obviously, rules like this are meant to be broken in photography. Just make sure what ever you do comes across as intentional!

A trend that I am noticing in this set is that your photos are leaning left. Even though the child statue is on the right hand side of the photo, all of these photos have similar compositions (Rule of Thirds). Make sure to keep how you shoot diverse! I know it is easy to fall into what is comfortable. I'm guilty of this too. (I took the same photo of four different windows while at Lacock!)

    Looking forward to next week!

  2. Bailey,

I think you have improved from last week! Your photos are much stronger and have greater contrasts. My favorite photos are Lacock Abbey and the wilting rose, simply because I like the subjects more. Cemeteries & their statues aren't my favorite :).

I look forward to seeing what you come up with for Week 3!

  3. Bailey,

From this week, I feel as if you images have gotten stronger since last. The image of the child statue and the magnolia flower are my favorite. With the flower, you did a good job of filling the frame with the flower. For the statue, the exposure is even, and the contrast is very nice. Just be careful not to add too much contrast or saturation, there is a fine line between the right amount and far too much.

  4. Bailey,
Really nice images this week! I like how a lot of your work focused on filling the frame and there’s some good use of positive and negative space, particularly in the final image! I think you should definately take Jasmine’s advice on straightening your images (I liked the hallway pic but it was distracting to have it tilted) but all in all I think you’re doing great!

  5. All five of these images are strong. Nicely seen, sharp and within a usable exposure range.

If you can straighten (via cropping) and lighten the Lacock Abbey image in GIMP, I would work on that a bit. You could selectively lighten the face of the cherub statue as well, if that's possible with the software, but the exposure itself is okay. The flowers are very well exposed, and the Virgin Mary is right on the border, perhaps losing a bit of the brightest highlight detail to clipping.

I like the tight framing, and at the same time I would like to see a bit more variation in terms of composition. Some wider shots would compliment this work well.

    Nice job!
