Definitions


  1. Complimentary Colors/Analogous Colors - colors across from each other on the color wheel/ Colors next to each other on the color wheel
  2. Asymmetry/Symmetry - things being the same or different on both sides
  3. Background/Middleground/foreground - spaces in the photo, foreground being closest to a camera, background in the back
  4. Camera Angle - the vantage point from which the photo was taken
  5. Cool Colors/Warm Colors - colors in art associated with temperature - blue, green, purple/orange, yellow, red
  6. Depth of Feild - how things in an image are focused and the distance between them
  7. Diagonal Lines - "Young, exciting design" - Joshua Johnson
  8. Filling the Frame - how much is in the photo
  9. Focal Point - The main subject of the photo/where the eye is drawn
  10. Framing Element - the edges of the photo/ what surrounds the focal point
  11. Horizon Line - The point in the background that everything leads into
  12. Juxtaposition - contrasting 2 unlike things
  13. Leading Lines - draw the eye through the piece
  14. Line - dividing spaces, or drawing focus to a particular area
  15. Negative/Positive space - empty/filled space in a piece that balances it out
  16. Pattern Texture - repeated texture
  17. "Rule" of Thirds - placing the subject in a single third of the piece to create a focal point
  18. Scale - the relative size of things in a piece
  19. Value - Range of tones from dark to light
  20. Value Contrast - lights and darks strongly contrasted
